Branching

The answer decides what's next

A survey asks the same thing of everyone. A conversation doesn't.

Route by what they picked

Each answer of a single-choice question names where it leads: another step, the end, or a link out. Turn the switch off and the whole thing goes back to a straight line.

Buttons on the video itself

Put a button on the frame and let it jump elsewhere, open a link, skip to a moment in the same video or do nothing but look good.

It refuses to publish a dead end

A step whose destination you never set, or one pointing at something you deleted, is caught before it ships rather than by the viewer.

What actually happens

An answer's destination outranks the step's. The step's own ending is the fallback for everyone who didn't take a route of their own, which is why you can start with a straight sequence and add branching to exactly one question later.

Every destination in the product speaks one vocabulary — play the next step, jump to a specific one, end here, open a URL — whether it's an answer, a button or the end of a step. Learning it once is the whole learning curve.
